What it is
Scaling and root planing, often called a deep cleaning, removes tartar and bacteria from below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces. It is used to treat gum disease, and this code applies when four or more teeth in one quarter of the mouth need it.
What the price covers
The fee is per quadrant and usually includes local anesthesia. The exam, X-rays, gum measurements and any antibiotic placed in the gums are billed separately.
Why prices differ
Hospital prices come mostly from hospital dental clinics and dental schools, which price differently from private offices; the number of quadrants treated sets the total.
