SelfPayRates itself sets no cookies, asks for no personal information and has no accounts. The prices are the same for everyone.

Advertising

The site is paid for by ads served by Google. Where ads are shown, your browser loads Google's ad script, which receives the address of the page you are reading and your IP address and may use cookies. Google's use of that data is described in How Google uses information from sites that use its services; you can turn off personalized ads at adssettings.google.com.

Grow by Mediavine

Pages load Grow, a script by Mediavine, Inc. that offers to save pages and counts visits for Mediavine, the company that manages our ads. It receives the address of the page you are reading and your IP address and may store an identifier in your browser. Mediavine describes its use of that data in its privacy policy.

A page about a medical procedure can reveal an interest in that procedure. Some states treat that as consumer health data that may not be collected without consent. We do not show ads, and do not load any ad or Grow script, to visitors in Washington, Nevada and Connecticut, or when we cannot tell where a visit comes from. To decide, the server looks up the country and state of your IP address in a local database; the result is used once and is not stored. Details: Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy.

Server logs

Like any website, the servers that deliver these pages (our host and Cloudflare, which protects the site) keep short-lived technical logs: the address requested (including any search words), the time, and the IP address and browser type of the request. Search result pages carry no ads. They are used only to keep the site running and to stop abuse, and are not sold or shared for advertising.

Visit counts

To know whether the site is useful, the server keeps a daily count of page views: the kind of page (for example, a procedure page or search results), the website that linked to it (for example, google.com) and whether the request came from a browser or from an AI assistant fetching the page for someone. Only these daily totals are stored — not the page address, search words, IP address, browser details or anything else that could tell one visit from another.

“Use my location”

The “Use my location” button is optional; a ZIP code works just as well. If you use it, your browser asks for your permission first. Your position is rounded on your device to about 0.7 mile — a neighborhood, not an address — and only that rounded point is sent, as part of the page address, to find the closest hospitals. We do not store it, and the page it opens carries no ads, so it is not sent to an ad network. Like any address requested, it can appear in the short-lived server logs above.

The map

The price map runs a map script, but everything it loads — the script, the map tiles, fonts and hospital prices — comes from this site. No map provider or other third party sees which area you look at. The page carries no ads.

The bill checker

The bill checker loads the chosen hospital's prices with the page and compares your bill on your device. What you paste stays in your browser: it is not sent to us or anyone else and is not stored. The page carries no ads; only the hospital you chose is part of its address.

The “cash or insurance” calculator on procedure pages also works on your device: the deductible and rates you type are not sent anywhere or stored. So does the year calculator: the plan and the care you pick stay in your browser, are not sent to us or anyone else, are not stored, and that page carries no ads.

Pricedle, the daily price game

Pricedle keeps your guesses and your streak only in your browser (its local storage), so a game survives a page reload. Nothing about your game is sent to us or anyone else. The game asks nothing about you or your health, so like other pages it can carry ads where ads are shown. Clearing your browser's site data resets it.
