Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy

This policy is written for the Washington My Health My Data Act, Nevada SB 370 and Connecticut's consumer health data rules, and applies to every visitor.

What we collect

There are no accounts or sign-up forms, and SelfPayRates sets no cookies. The only data that could count as consumer health data is technical: when you open a page about a procedure, or type a procedure or place into the search box, the address of that page (including your search words) and your IP address reach our host and Cloudflare in the course of delivering it. Search words are used only to find matching pages and are not stored anywhere except those short-lived logs. The server also keeps daily page-view totals by kind of page and referring website, with nothing that identifies a visit or a visitor (see Privacy).

The bill checker compares the lines of a bill with the hospital's prices on your device. What you paste stays in your browser: it is not sent to us or anyone else, not stored, and the page carries no ads. Only the hospital you chose is part of the page address.

The insurance or cash calculator works the same way: the care you expect and the plan you type stay in your browser, are not sent or stored, and the page carries no ads.

Why, and for how long

Only to deliver the page, keep the site running and stop abuse. Those logs are rotated automatically and are not used for profiling, advertising or anything else. We never sell consumer health data.

Who else receives it

Outside Washington, Nevada and Connecticut, pages carry ads served by Google and the Grow script by Mediavine, and your browser sends Google and Mediavine the page address and your IP address (see Privacy). In those three states, and whenever we cannot tell where a visit comes from, no such script is loaded and nothing is shared with an ad network. Search result pages, “nearby” pages, the map and the bill checker never carry these scripts, so your search words, location and bill are never sent to an ad network. Cloudflare (network protection) and our hosting provider process requests on our behalf. To choose where ads may appear, the server looks up the state of your IP address in a local database (IP geolocation by DB-IP); the IP is not sent anywhere for this and the result is not stored.

Your rights

You may ask whether we hold consumer health data about you, ask for a copy, ask us to delete it, or withdraw consent. Because we keep nothing linked to a person, the answer will usually be that we hold none, but we will check the logs we have and reply within 45 days.
