Cash or insurance?
If you have insurance but have not met your deductible, you pay the rate your plan negotiated with the hospital, not the cash price. Hospital price files list those rates too: for knee replacement, the highest negotiated rate in a hospital's file has a median of $27,132.59 and the lowest a median of $3,399.00. What is CPT 27447?
A total knee replacement removes worn cartilage and bone from the knee and replaces the joint surfaces with metal and plastic parts. It is most often done for severe knee arthritis that limits walking and daily life.
What the price covers
The hospital price usually covers the operating room, implants and hospital stay. The surgeon, anesthesiologist and outpatient physical therapy are often billed separately unless the price is a bundled package.
Why prices differ
Prices vary with implant costs, outpatient versus inpatient care, surgery center versus hospital, and whether the facility sells an all-inclusive cash bundle.
What to ask
Ask whether the self-pay price for CPT 27447 includes the surgeon, anesthesia, implant and any overnight stay, and whether follow-up visits are included.

CPT 27447 is the billing code for total knee replacement. A total knee replacement removes worn cartilage and bone from the knee and replaces the joint surfaces with metal and plastic parts. It is most often done for severe knee arthritis that limits walking and daily life.
Is a partial knee replacement the same code?
No. Replacing only one compartment of the knee is a different code (27446).
How long does recovery take?
