What it is
A total knee replacement removes worn cartilage and bone from the knee and replaces the joint surfaces with metal and plastic parts. It is most often done for severe knee arthritis that limits walking and daily life.
What the price covers
The hospital price usually covers the operating room, implants and hospital stay. The surgeon, anesthesiologist and outpatient physical therapy are often billed separately unless the price is a bundled package.
