Cash or insurance?
At 10 of 10 hospitals that publish insurer rates for this code here, the cash price is below the highest rate a health plan has negotiated, and at 8 it is below every plan's rate. If you have insurance but have not met your deductible, you usually pay your plan's negotiated rate, which falls somewhere in the "Insurers pay" column. Paying cash can cost less, but a cash payment usually does not count toward your deductible. Ask the hospital for both numbers before you book.
What it is
This is the inactivated polio vaccine (IPOL), the only polio vaccine used in the US. Children get four doses: at 2 and 4 months, at 6 to 18 months and at 4 to 6 years. Adults who were never vaccinated, or who travel to places with polio, may need doses too.
What the price covers
The price is for the vaccine dose. Giving the shot is usually a separate line (code 90471 for the first vaccine of the visit, 90472 for each additional one).
