Pregnancy and birth cost in New Jersey without insurance
In New Jersey, the median cash price for Vaginal birth is $5,339.00 across 13 hospitals, from $3,786.00 to $24,037.85. The lowest is at Community Medical Center (Toms River). The US median is $3,815.00.
Why New Jersey prices look low: under state law (P.L.2008, c.60), a hospital may not charge an uninsured New Jersey resident whose family income is below 500% of the federal poverty level more than 115% of what Medicare pays for the same service. If that is you, ask the hospital's billing office to apply this limit; a separate physician fee may still apply. Other states' laws.
Pregnancy care is billed in several parts: the delivering clinician's global fee (59400 for a vaginal birth, 59510 for a cesarean, 59610 for a vaginal birth after cesarean) covers routine prenatal visits, the delivery and postpartum care, while the hospital stay, anesthesia, lab tests, ultrasounds and the newborn's care are billed separately. The most important price fact is that the global fee in the table is not the total cost of having a baby.

Paying cash: what to do
- Ask the hospital whether it offers a self-pay maternity package for the delivery stay, and what it excludes, such as an epidural, a cesarean or newborn care.
- Apply for Medicaid as soon as you know you are pregnant; pregnancy coverage often has higher income limits than other adult coverage, and it can sometimes start retroactively.
- Ask both the clinician and the hospital for a Good Faith Estimate that lists the expected codes for delivery, anesthesia and newborn care.
